Research Interests

Stephan is the group leader of the Phenotyping group at ACPFG at the University of Adelaide. He and the group perform and help with phenotyping, establish new phenotyping tools with a focus on field-based phenotyping, and provide growth facilities for all groups at ACPFG.

Biography
Stephan graduated in biology and soil science from the University of Hamburg, Germany. After conducting some smaller research projects for the university, he started his PhD research on nutrient management for irrigated rice in West Africa at the Senegalese station of the West Africa Rice Development Association (WARDA) in Senegal. After completing his PhD, he continued working for WARDA for his post-doctoral research until he was offered a position at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in 2003. He then worked for 10 years at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines, where he became a senior researcher with a focus on soil science and agronomy for rain fed rice systems. Most of his work was conducted in collaboration with colleagues from national research institutions in several countries of South and Southeast Asia. And in January 2013 he started his current position with the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics.
